officially, our driveway is ~3,000 feet long. from the main road it is 1,325 feet to the house and barn, then another 1,600+ feet up and around the pastures to the Hacker House.

when we moved in there was large rock along the entire stretch, which was not fun to drive on. so we spent ~$8500 and had crushed asphalt millings poured over the main drive. but now we need more coverage as vehicles (guests) make the trek up the 2nd half of the driveway to stay overnight.

first we improved the grading to have a water runoff towards the fence on the right in the picture above. next i had a dump truck bring us a couple loads of fill dirt @ $350 each.

this helped us create a more dramatic slope and fill in spots that were already washed out from recent storms. next, we had a few loads of asphalt millings poured, which we spread out with the tractor and drove over a few times for good measure.

this was just ~175 feet of coverage, primarily so passenger vehicles could make it up the hill more easily when it's wet. overall it was incredibly expensive as we later had to redo it. i'll put that in a future post.

here's the view of everything when it was done. just a couple hundred feet of better traction for the steep uphill grade.

finally, here's a pic from when it rained a couple weeks later. despite this project going over budget, it did achieve its main purpose of redirecting water to prevent further erosion.
